Detroit politicians are on the gravy train, with a $1.8 billion plan to bring casino gambling into the daily lives of Detroit's largely black population. But, Detroit blacks are angry at Detroit's black mayor, Dennis Archer, for not turning the gambling industry over to blacks. Fears of casinos breeding crime and gambling addictions have been dismissed, with so much money laying on the table. Blacks are angry at the black Archer for passing over black applicants in awarding all three available casino franchises to the MGM Grand, AtwaterCircus Circus and Greektown/Chippewa Indians groups. Racist former Representative Barbara-Rose Collins was livid. She didn't want no whites or injuns running gambling in her town. "Imagine a city that's 80 percent white and a white mayor and 80 percent white council chose three African-American casinos for their city. Can you imagine that in these United States?'' Another racist black who wanted the gambling franchise to be awarded on the basis of race (his own), was Don Barden, a former cable TV magnate whose casino application was one of those rejected, called Archer "a mis-educated Negro. We've got to get that sucker out of office.''
Black mob mentality has led to a ballot initiative in August 1998 seeking to force the city to forbid whites and indians from owning a casino.
