Dick's Guide to a convicted ex-Alabama Governor, Guy Hunt, Gets to Run another Day
___________________________________________________________________________________________
For those who believe the law treats all alike, Alabama's politically controlled
Parole Board decision may come as a surprise. In 1998 the board pardoned
for innocence convicted ex Governor Guy Hunt. This pardon for
innocence means the parole board overturned the Governor's conviction, deciding
that everyone involved with the trial had no idea what they were doing.
The pardon for innocence also restores this convicted felon's full
civil rights, meaning he can again run for public office. The Parole
Boards scheme -- to pardon for innocence -- was so novel it had been used
only once before in Alabama's history. A few hours later the now innocent,
convicted felon picked up papers to run for governor.
If you wonder what's going on in Alabama,
take a look at (and maybe order) one of these books about Alabama.
Hunt was convicted and removed from office in April 1993 for the personal use of $200,000 from the tax-exempt fund set up for his 1987 inauguration. He was sentenced to probation and community service and fined $212,000 in court costs and restitution,. He never paid the money, until one day before getting his innocence restored. In a strange twist, that can be only attributed to scheming Alabama politicians and lawyers, the monet he paid is going into the Hunt Transition and Inaugural Fund, in care of Birmingham attorney John Grenier. Grenier helped establish the fund in 1986. Any leftover money was supposed to go to restore the governor's mansion, recruit industry or other similar projects. None ever found its way there, according to trial testimony. This makes one wonder what will happen with the latest Alabama tax contribution to this Hunt fund.
It only took two parole commission members, John Nettles and Louie Grimes, to make this novel decision.
For those who really believe democracy is alive and well in Alabama, I ask this. What chances do you think you would have in Alabama of being paroled for innocence?
If you want to ask more about this issue, try Republican State party Chairman Roger McConnell. Hunt picked up Republican nomination papers. Also try Greg Griffin who is counsel for the state Board of Pardons and Paroles and might be able to shed light on the "new" evidence that came to light and inspired John Nettles and Louie Grimes decision.
