Judges are lawyers.  Lawyers get paid big bucks by politicians.  In the late 1990's judges were increasingly upset about average people using the courts against their major benefactors -- the big corporations.  On March 19, 1998 a judge in the U.S. District Court of Florida demanded a guy by the name of  John W. Stanis to pay Allied Signal's lawyers for successfully defending against a case brought by John for patent infringement.  Seems John got a patent in 1992 for a widget, and he felt that Allied Signal had infringed his patent.  Allied Signal sells $14.5 billion annually.  It insisted it had gotten a patent for the widget 20 years earlier (suggesting that the American Taxpayers are paying for incompetents in the U.S. Patent Office).  The judge agreed that the Patent Office had screwed up so he did the logical thing -- he made Mr. Stanis pay for Allied Signals costs.  Allied Signal was so happy it issued a press release to warn off other folks who might want to fight Allied Signal.  "We're very pleased that the court has ruled in our favor," said Peter M. Kreindler, Senior Vice President and General Counsel of AlliedSignal Inc. "This lawsuit had no merit. We hope that the U.S. District Court's ruling on fees and costs sends a message to those who initiate groundless lawsuits. Allied Signal will not only vigorously defend these suits, but will also seek to recoup all of our costs associated with them."  It looks like this big corporation's lawyers are out -- not just to win lawsuits -- but to scare the hell out of any poor person even thinking of suing them.  And the lawyer-judges are going along with their big corporation brethren.
