Henry Sidgwick
wrote The Methods of Ethics and it had an impact on world history as well as political
ethics. Henry Sidgwick was born in Skipton, England in 1838. He wrote the Methods of
Ethics in 1883. He died in 1900 at Cambridge, where he had founded the woman's college,
Newnham. Veracity is the topic in one of Sidgwick's chapters. He addresses the
question of when to lie and when to tell the truth. Conventional, polite lies ("you
look great today) are preferrable to the brutal truth ("where did you get that ugly
dresss?"). More importantly lying was alright if it was the expedient thing to
do. But, expediency meant that -- in lying -- you were doing the most good for the
most people. Sidgwick believed in the cost/benefit approach of Utilitarianism, which
had been developed by Jeremy Bentham, and was used by people like James Mill, John Stuart
Mills and Thurgood Marshall, in his dissent in Gregg v. Georgia. Political ethics
