One of the promises was that -- if during their career with Digital they became long term disabled -- Digital would continue to pay into their pension plan until the age of retirement. After merging with Compaq, in October 1998, they sent such disabled employees a message telling them "your status as an employee of Digital (now Compaq) will terminate effective December 31, 1998 ... you will no longer accrue a benefit under Digital's Cash Account Pension Plan after December 31, 1998."
