Digital Equipment Corporation and Compaq merged. Digital had hired employees based upon certain promises. It had established an ERISA benefit's package for it's employee's. (Click here to see sites petaining to ERISA). One of the promises was that -- if during their career with Digital they became long term disabled -- Digital would continue to pay into their pension plan until the age of retirement. After merging with Compaq, in October 1998, they sent such disabled employees a message telling them "your status as an employee of Digital (now Compaq) will terminate effective December 31, 1998 ... you will no longer accrue a benefit under Digital's Cash Account Pension Plan after December 31, 1998."
