Callahan, like Gonzales, is Hispanic. There has never been a Hispanic Supreme Court justice, and democrats do not want a republican president to be the first to name a Hispanic.  Democrats would like to make sure Hispanics do not have successful role models and will go all out to smear any Hispanic nominee.  Of course, the Democrats can also be sure to go after any conservative women or blacks to be nominated.  Teddy Kennedy can be counted on to smear any black or Hispanic nominee with terms like "extremist."

Thinking independent voters (not yellow dog democrats or died-in-the wool republicans) already knew, by 2000, that both parties are for sale to the highest bidder, both parties have politicians who will lie and do anything to get elected, and both parties politicians use American taxpayer money to reward the special interest groups that support them.  See, for example, Why politicians cannot be trusted to investigate terrorist attacks and natural disasters.  Republicans can be happy that Independent voters have not yet reached the point where they  reject both parties.  These voters still largely believe voting for a third party "wastes" their votes.  Independent voters -- who control the outcome of elections -- tend to vote for the least worst candidate from the two major parties.  When one party is clearly seen as spreading hate and lies, writing fake indictments and dividing America with attacks on women, black and Hispanic presidential nominees, the independent voter has no option but to vote for the other party.
