termagant \TUR-muh-gunt\ (noun) - An overbearing, quarrelsome, scolding, or nagging woman; shrew.

   Medieval Christians knew little about Islam except that it was the religion - out of ignorance, they believed that Muslims worshipped Termagant, a character portrayed in medieval mystery plays as violent and turbulent. He became the ultimate literary bully, and references to him can also be found in Chaucer and Shakespeare (when he was decidedly male). By the sixteenth century, "termagant" was being used for any overbearing, turbulent person, male or female, but eventually the meaning was narrowed to refer exclusively to difficult females.
