You will also find detailed information here about Roman Catholic prejudice and bigotry aimed at King James II by intolerant Protestants, Why King James II was forced to flee to France by the hate inspired and murderous protestants.

Protestant politicians demonized King James II attempts to stop treating Catholics in England as second class citizens.  Protestant bigots, worriers and the  power mongers who strove to protect their special privileges, insisted James wanted to Catholicize England.  The politicians in parliament were largely bigots who had long been in the habit of passing discriminatory laws against Catholics.  When James used his kingly "Dispensing Power" to make the hate-based statutes illegal, Protestant lawmakers insisted the discrimination continued.  They wanted to continue to prevent Catholics from praying.  Prejudiced Protestant politicians did not like King James II's Declaration of Indulgence.  The indulgence declaration was  designed to prohibit the incarceration of non Protestant people from praying.  It stopped bigoted government officials from demanding religious conformity, something demanded even today by many Islamic nations and some areas in Texas.  The Protestant hate drove James II away, and the Protestant Parliament was free to continue its bigotry.  James was replaced by William of Orange and his wife Mary.  William was James's son-in-law.  Some rebellion followed, but it was not strong enough to overthrow the prejudiced, hate-filled, English Parliament politicians. But, the narrow minded English majority had done America a favor.  Catholics were not the only Christians persecuted by the religious zealots.  Many of the persecuted came to America and settled in the colonies.  England's loss due to Protestant bigotry became AMerica's gain.  Other topics in American history.

The Glorious Revolution was another milestone in American history, as well as English history.  It was the culmination of hundreds of years of legally limiting the power of the King, that had started with the Magna Carter, would continue with, for example, the Declaration of Independence and extend to the year 2000 when some reformers in the United States tried to reform campaign spending practices so citizens would have more control of their government.  It might be safe to say that the Glorious Revolution of 1688, which was a bloodless revolution, ended any political power the King had and placed England's politicians totally in charge of the government.  But the revolution may have had more to do with anti-Catholic discrimination than the desires of the average Englishman to be free.

When I arrived in Savannah, Georgia in 1998 I discovered a strange, subtle discrimination against Catholicism.  It was not an openly hostile discrimination, but a discrimination of ignorance.  One women I met did not know that Catholics were Christians.  Another insisted that Catholics "worship" the Pope.  With this 1998 view of hidden myths about Catholics, I am not at all surprised that in 1688 the protestants had their "glorious revolution" against King James.  Protestants were upset that King James overturned laws that prosecuted Catholics and other "unusual" sects from practicing their religion.  Freedom of Religion had few supporters in the anti-Catholic England.  Still, many modern writers blame the Glorious Revolution on King James himself, who undoubtedly deserved some of it.

"To a large extent, the Roman Catholic James II (1633-1701), King of Great Britain from 1685 until he fled to France in 1688, brought the "Glorious" revolution down upon himself. When he succeeded his brother Charles II on the English throne, he proceeded to alienate virtually every politically and militarily significant segment of English society by commencing ill-advised attempts to Catholicize the army and the government and to pack parliament with supporters. He employed the Dispensing Power -- the royal prerogative of suspending the operation of various statutes, declared illegal in 1689 in the Bill of Rights -- to evade the Act of Uniformity and the Test Act; and his Declaration of Indulgence, issued in 1687-88, suspended penal legislation against religious nonconformity, allowing Dissenters to worship in meeting houses, and Catholics to worship in private.

When, in June 1688, he had a son, fears of the establishment of a Catholic dynasty in England led prominent Protestant statesmen to invite William of Orange, James's son-in-law, to assume the throne. William landed with an army at Torbay in November 1688, promised to defend the liberty of England and the Protestant religion, and marched unopposed on London. James fled ignominiously to France. Parliament then met, denounced James, offered the throne to William and his wife Mary as joint sovereigns, and placed constitutionally significant legal and practical limitations on the monarchy. William, as soon as he felt secure on the throne (though there was a rebellion of Scottish Jacobites under Dundee that ended with their defeat at the battle of Killiecrankie in 1689, and another in Ireland in which the Irish and French Jacobites under James II were defeated at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690) brought England into the War (against France) of the League of Augsberg, which went on until 1697.
